Consumers want more firms to focus on data security and privacy

Greater data security

In a bid to discover what consumers really value from brands, FleishmanHillard Fishburn decided to undertake an extensive survey of over 1,000 people. And, what this research found is that the majority of consumers are still not convinced that brands are fully clued up when it comes to data security and privacy.

According to the study, 53% of customers want the firms they associate with to put more focus on data security, with many claiming that they believe big corporations currently ‘don’t take responsibility’. A number of people also suggested that companies need to be more transparent, and should speak directly to consumers about ‘the bigger issues’.

But why is this such a significant concern for so many people?


The recent history of data breaches

Given the fact that a number of major corporations have recently experienced data breaches, it’s unsurprising that it’s an issue at the forefront of many people’s minds.

In September of this year, Facebook announced that almost 50 million people were left exposed following a significant security breach, while Google recently confirmed – months after the issue actually arose – that 500,000 accounts could be affected due to a serious coding fault. Meanwhile, Apple was forced to disclose that a number of Apple IDs were recently stolen in China.
