When Virgin Media were looking to launch a new platform for interactive TV services, the vendor chosen to deliver the content was TiVo.
The preferred Virgin Media hardware choice was not supported by TiVo, and Virgin Media assigned the project to Shift F7 to recommend and specify the core infrastructure architecture to run this service. Initially discussions were around an HP Rackmount platform, however with the usual ongoing concerns around power consumption and rackspace, the Shift F7 technical and sales team put forward HP Blade architecture as the best solution.
Whilst there were some initial technical obstacles to overcome, the technical specification had to adhere to strict guidelines from TiVo and required custom configuration specification, after lab testing the decision was made to go with HP Blades.
When the service went live, Shift F7 also worked with the Virgin Media team to provision for Disaster Recovery out of their Knowsley datacentre for service resilience.
As this is a mission critical customer facing application, Shift F7 worked with the HP services team to introduce HP proactive support to ensure the highest availability of service and continued best practises. The entire TiVo core IT system is covered by HP Datacenter Care Primary Service Provider multivendor services for reactive and proactive support
Since then Shift F7 have been engaged in the expansion of the architecture which now runs more than two and a half million set top boxes and the estate has been upgraded over the years to run the latest Gen 8 HP Blade servers and storage.
