Channel 5

Launched in 1997, Five is the UK's fastest growing commercial terrestrial station. The key to Five's success is its investment in programming. Five has developed a reputation for being a broad appeal channel with particular strengths in programming areas such as children's, factual entertainment, news, arts and features.

Requirement

To enable a number of users, who are non-Five employees (but trusted) to access a bespoke scheduling application from a remote location on a regular basis. The login procedure and navigation had to be simple, as multiple logins would not be acceptable to the end users. The application was required to run as if installed locally, with no local software to be installed on the end users PC's (or Terminals). Security was a key requirement for the solution, with features including data encryption and support for RSA Secure tokens also being important considerations for the solution.

Original Microsoft Only Implementation

The solution initially trialled by Five, utilised MS Terminal Services. The shortcomings of this solution were complicated multiple logins, and no clear intuitive means of navigating from one login to the next.

Citrix Solution

The solution utilised Citrix Presentation Server 3.0, Access Gateway 3.0, Web Interface and Secure Ticket Authority

The solution was a two node implementation, the Secure Access Gateway and Web Interface running on one server in the DMZ and Presentation Server 3.0 and the Secure Ticket Authority running on a second server behind the firewall. Users would initially connect to the Web Interface and download an ICA Web Client (JAVA Based) allowing ICA connections to be initiated to the MetaFrame PS3 Server Farm. The Web Interface provided the single login RSA Token authentication and a link to the Scheduling Application

This solution reduced the number of login / authentications from five to two. Subsequently RSA Secure Tokens were also integrated into the solution without any impact to the number of logins required.
