Brixton on Line
Brixton Online is a non profit making organisation set up by leading members of the community to assist the community and particularly small and medium size businesses harness the tremendous resources and opportunities current information and communications technologies have to offer. The primary aim is to increase the quality of life and well being of the local community.
Requirement
The Into project formally called ECIX (Elephant & Castle Information Exchange)represented phase 2 of Southwark Councils' ambitious plan to regenerate business and community links within the Elephant and Castle. The objectives of the project were to "Engage with local people and organisations in the Elephant and Castle to create an active and connected community that translates potential and diversity into enterprise, learning and jobs and disseminates its experience as best practise across the London Borough of Southwark and beyond."
Part of this vision was to deliver computing resources to local resources centres enabling the local community to access standard applications (word, excel, etc.) and a variety of training packages and other learning materials.
Citrix Solution
The solution had to be scalable, easy to administer and support. The ability to access resource intensive applications using low hardware specification client systems was another important consideration, as the resource centres were likely to be located in areas where security was poor and the risk of theft high.
Citrix was recommended as the most suitable solution as it allowed for centralised administration and simple deployment of applications. Also as a server based computing solution, the client side devices did need not to be high specification, latest generation devices. The client devices only required a minimal software build, Operating System and Web Browser, therefore recovery in the event of corruption or failure would be a quick and simple process.
The solution design was a 4 node Citrix Metaframe XP server farm initially installed at the BoL offices to allow testing of some of the non-standard applications that were to be published to the user community. After testing and validation of the required applications, the farm was re-located, installed and re-configured in the INTO domain at the primary INTO resource centre.
Client Comments
This was our second project engagement with Shift F7, the initial one being a Citrix based remote access solution to enable home working for key employees. Because of the consultative approach, professionalism and expertise of Shift F7's engineers, we had no difficulties in selecting them to work with us on this much larger Citrix project.
